Stop Wasting Food!

Do you know that in Canada, 40% of our food is wasted? It is either tossed out partially rotten from our fridges, thrown out in restaurants, or tossed from supermarket shelves. I was reading this article in Chatelaine magazine, and I learned a couple of things I thought I would share with you.

1. Don’t freeze your meat directly in the package from the supermarket. The plastic film they use often allows air to get into the meat, which creates freezer burn. So buy some freezer bags!
2. Best before dates are a guideline. You can make your own decision on this one, but often, if you eat a yogurt that is one day after the best before, it is absolutely fine.
3. Sandi Richard, host of Food Network’s “Fixing Diner” suggests making a “strata” with leftovers. Spray a casserole dish, toss in leftover cooked meat, veggies, cheese, three cubs of cubed bread and any herbs you like. Cover with four beaten eggs mixed with one cup of milk, then bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

Do you have any ideas as to how to stop wasting food?

How about making a casserole in a casserole dish instead of a “strata” with leftovers.
I always thought that casseroles were the result of leftovers being introduced to cheese and tomato sauce.
