Waterford : Abandoned House Set on Fire

Norfolk County Fire and Rescue don't know why anyone would want to set fire to a gutted Waterford home. During the lunch hour yesterday neighbors on Cottage Street reported smoke and flames through the windows. Fire Prevention Officer Ken Sheridan says damage to the structure was fairly minimal, and luckily no one was hurt. The early investigation points to arson, but Sheridan says the building was not insured and he's not sure what would have been the motivation to set the fire. He says these types of crimes simply tie up resources and waste tax-payer dollars.

What was originally hoped to cost 780 thousand dollars has taken a quick leap to over 1.1 million. Norfolk County Public Works and Environmental Services staff pegged reconstruction of Washington Street in Waterford at 780 thousand, but because of additional work to a storm sewer, it's come in a lot higher. But staff sees the money being made up through savings on the La Salette Road reconstruction, which will be under budget. They've also increased the budget for reconstruction of Orchard Ave in Delhi by 25 thousand dollars to expand the upgrades.

Deer will continue to graze at the Waterford Deer Park, for now. After it came to light in recent months that all the females from the herd at the park were wiped out by coyotes, Council had the suggestion put to them to turn the responsibility of the park over to another group, provided they could obtain the proper insurance. The park would otherwise be in jeopardy of closing down. Public Works and Environmental Services General Manager, Eric D'Hondt, says it's not just about the cost of re-populating or maintaining the group. He says there are significant liabilities to keeping it, like attacks, because they are not domesticated. Waterford Councilor, Harold Sonnenburg, says there's a group of people in Waterford that want to be part of a committee responsible for looking after the herd. Staff is going to bring back a report for the possible formation of this committee.
