Drug and alcohol use were subjects fired at a Caledonia man suing the province and OPP after being caught in the middle of a native protest. A Crown lawyer representing the Ontario government questioned David Brown yesterday, getting him to admit to using cocaine, alcohol and cold remedies to stay awake during the early weeks of the Douglas Creek Estates standoff in 2006. Brown and wife Dana Chatwell argue they were left to live in terror while the police stood by during the dispute. Brown says he was afraid to go to sleep for fear of his family and property which bordered the occupied development.

What in anybodys name is the use or non use of drugs, alcohol or caffine have to do with the total abdication of province to enforce the criminal code of canada and the province. I am ashamed to be a part of the citizenry of a province that has abandonded this family to the hands af anarchists. I think this family has held up remarkably well given the provincial inability to find enough viagara to deal with this properly. If the family left to the wolves by the OPP drinks orange juice or vodka and orange juice it makes no difference to the fact that provice owes this family every nickle they ask for. This problem could have been solved for less than $300,000, but the province now will be on the hook for $7 million...and this family deserves every cent and more.

This is a strategy typical of governments, bureaucracies, large organizations and sometimes posters on public access bulletin boards;

When the message is embarrassing then shoot the messenger.

It is an approach used when someone is cornered and there is little to defend a position for which there is no defense. “Scapegoating” is not a political party specific process and has been used successfully by ALL political parties. Most recently we saw what happened to Linda Keen when she was pilloried and fired from her position as nuclear safety watchdog and what is now happening to Richard Colvin for his testimony at the ongoing “hot issue” parliamentary enquiry.

On the provincial level, Brown and wife Dana Chatwell are being squeezed through the ringers to try to take the focus off the issue and a subtle message to any others who would consider “rocking the boat” in Caledonia.

I agree with sheckie that this is a despicable abuse of power and do hope that eventually the family will be compensated, the OPP will be forced to review their current (and future strategy) and this fiasco in Caledonia finally comes to an end!

The Brown family are victims pure and simple and Big Guy is correct when he says that blaming the victim is being used as a tool by the Province and OPP because they are cornered. They know they are guilty of not protecting Mr. Brown and his family and just want to shift the spotlight and blame away from themselves onto Mr. Brown and his family, the victims by attacking his character, and this is absolutely dispicable. Also, it was outrageous that the Crown lawyer chastised Mr. Brown about putting up and flying his Canadian flag saying he was trying to incite the indians when in fact the indians planted their own flags all over the place thumbing their noses at the Canadian flag. Mr. Brown stated he was a proud Canadian and as proud Canadians are we not taught to fly the Canadian flag proudly..what a crock of poop from the Crown lawyer. I would love for the judge to say 7 million is not enough and give him 10 million dollars.

What is wrong with this country?

The Defendant says,
"I'm a very, very proud Canadian. I'm proud of my country ... And you're telling me that I'm provoking somebody by hanging the Canadian flag in my yard?"

It's becoming embarrassing being a Canadian. My support goes to the Browns......Good Luck
