Norfolk County : SCOR; More Money For Tobacco Farmers
Posted by Jen Waumsley

It's the good news and forward motion the tobacco belt has been waiting for. The South Central Ontario Region - or SCOR for short - is happy to announce the Federal Government has launched the Sand Plains Community Development Fund. It's a 15 million dollar program that will help Brant, Elgin, Middlesex, Oxford and Norfolk Counties make the transition out of tobacco. Community based projects that support regional development and diversification and create jobs will be able to apply for a chunk of the cash. SCOR also announced they have approved their long-range Strategic Management Plan: it's called "the Path Forward."

Just what is a community based farm project? Kids park? bird watching? Golf courses? What?

I think tobacco farmers are more interested in knowing where the Provinces 40% is and why the federal government is not pressuring them to anti up the money.

This once again will be the #1 subject when the election rolls around. Who can fight for and get the province to deliver those funds will win.

Bargnani, you are worse than a dog with a bone.

Get over it. There is no 40% except in your fertile immagination. The province is under no obligation to cough up dime one and it has no intention of doing so.

As for the number 1 issue in the next election - federal or provincial - even locally, it ain't gonna be tobacco. And in any event, it sounds like you have to vote NDP because you have made your hate for liberals well known and lets face it, neither of our long serving and influential tory representatives (Finley/Barrett) have managed to get the job done in your opinion.

You just can't let that go can you? Like h*** it will be the #1 issue in the next elections. Ontario has made it clear they aren't taking part. Unfortunate, but true.

No! Tobacco farmers are not going to "let it go". Backing out of the exit program was a complete s...w over pure and simple. While you folks are practically giddy at the thought that "Haha those tobacco farmers got it stuck to them" you are missing one important thing.
You think the province shafting tobacco farmers is gonna be a one time thing. No it's not! They stuck it to tobacco farmers because politically they could get away with it without offending their Toronto/urban friends. The same warped logic that McGuinty's liberals are using justify not keeping their 60/40 funding commitments will be used again and again whenever they don't want to pay for some rural/non-Toronto program.
Other groups who have traditionally been able to count on provincial funding will sooner or later hear the same "no" from McGuinty and when they do folks won't find it nearly as amusing as they do right now.
