Toby Barrett says native occupation of former DCE lands must end

Toby_Barrett

Toby Barrett says the native occupation at the former Douglas Creek Estates land in Caledonia has to stop.

The 6th anniversary of the occupation comes up on the 28th.

The Haldimand-Norfolk Conservative MPP says there must be pressure on the McGuinty government to do what he says is the ‘right thing’.

In fact, he says he believes it’s ‘incumbent on all residents to put pressure on various political parties’, whether they’re in power or not–to come with a “very hardline policy to wrap up this situation”.

Barrett’s position on the issue is clear…

Barrett credits Gary Mchale and CANACE for keeping the issue alive in the media and in the limelight, suggesting a lot of McHale’s ideas have been ‘pretty good’.

They include having more oversight from the Ontario Ombudsman with respect to the OPP and more protection for whistleblowers in the Police service.

… whether in power or not …

would have to agree with you Toby. Might want to add ‘whether federal or provincial’ as well.

Any change to reduce vote minded, politically correct interference from politicians has my attention and vote

    • Beware industrial wind turbines! says:

Ya exactly, greenboy. If we got rid of ‘vote-minded, politically correct INTERFERENCE from politicians’ we wouldn’t have all of these useless wind turbines.

  2. bobo says:

Ya ya yap yap you have been saying this for a while now Toby yawn!!!!!

  3. Leasa says:

Thank you Toby! McGuinty is not about to do anything on this issue…as long as it’s not in Toronto’s backyard as far as McGuinty is concerned it’s not happening.

    • wombat says:

Tell me Leasa, do you think that if Steve & Diane got off their butts and got on with their job and settled the land claim (federal jurisdiction after all) then Dalton & co. might be able to get on with the DCE mess.

    • JM says:

I personally believe that aboriginal affairs are federal not provincial.
Mc Guinty shouldn’t get involved but if Barret want to do something, perhaps call his friend Diane and bitch as why they don’t act on this issue.

This is obviously not on Harper’s agenda. mandatory 3 year jail time for loaded weapon is…

  4. brent says:

Tell us what you would do Toby.

  5. MySay says:

I think we would all like to see it come to end(both sides of the dispute), and quite frankly everyone has been saying since it started that it must come to an end. I agree with Toby, but saying and doing are two different things.

  6. skeptic says:

I heard, that since Six Nation’s origins are American, there are no treaties in place here with them.
The existing Canadian treaties are with the tribes Six Nations chased away or conquered.
If this is true now what?

  7. JM says:

as usual, Toby said so..that’s very helpful….

  8. Medusa says:

Thank goodness it is finally over. Toby has said that it has to stop so now its gonna stop. Way to go Toby, you should have done that a long time ago.

And Toby, I assume that Gary McHale, the guy you say has good ideas will be the negotiator representing you who will stop this?

Again well done Toby! Why didn’t McGuinty think of that?

  9. SoCal says:

FACT 1: The Federal government holds a valid surrender from Six Nations regarding DCE and the rest of the Plank Rd claim.

FACT 2: That valid surrender means that DCE is a policing issue, which falls into the Province’s lap.

FACT 3: McGuinty is a coward.

    • Brother says:

It is all very well and good to say Fact…but facts mean that there is clear, irrevocable evidence. Point us to this surrender to prove your point.

FACT: Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (federal) is the lead

FACT: Diane Finley has been scarce

FACT Steven Harper is a coward.

      FACT: Policing is Provincial

FACT McGuinty should be enforcing the rule of law…no matter the jurisdiction

FACT: All sides are to blame, no one has done anything creative, or constructive.

  10. Medusa says:

FACT 1:Those people in Syria who are rioting and rebelling are being systematically killed by government forces.

FACT 2:The responsibility of looking after riots and disturbances is the police force.

FACT 3:This makes the problem that is currently taking place in Syria as a police issue. Why can’t those policemen maintain control?

    • Fact 1, the police don’t have artillery or tanks.

Fact 2, you’re way off topic.

Fact 3, Syria is an Islamic and Arab state without a democracy, so why is it relevant?

      • Medusa says:

FACT1: If you can’t see the relevance to the focus of the reply then you would not understand the reference.

        FACT 2: See FACT 1

  11. Berend says:

many cute comments, but get back to the isuue at hand. DCE, as far as the govt. is concerned, was surrendered. McGuinty paid for it a second time with our money. We pay taxes on it, we pay the heat, hydro, water, sewage bills. Yet, if we set foot on it, the police dept. that we pay for remove us. The natives, who have yet to proove they own the land, are free to congregate on the land when they feel like it, make the rules, live in the housing we provide, free of charge at our expense, and are protected by the very police we hire to protect us.

Of course, this has got to stop. At least have the balls to say, if nothing else, it is off limits to everyone until things are settled. Schools are pushing to stop bullying. Why bother when, based on this, we see bullying works.
