New Open Air Burning Bylaw in Norfolk

bonfire

You no longer need a burn permit for a campfire or recreational fire thanks to the new open air burning bylaw in Norfolk County.

Campfires are also now allowed at urban homes.

Other changes in the bylaw were done in consultation with the agriculture industry in Norfolk County.

Basically a 200 square foot limit was set on the size of a fire a farmer can have.

However, if they have taken the proper measures for safety they can go above that.

About time some common sense prevailed. Now if Haldimand only had some common sense.

    About time….

  3. Medusa says:

So somebody is having a “recreational” fire on their property. a passerby phones in a fire alarm thinking that there is a problem there. There is no permit on file so the dispatcher sends out the troops.

Who is charged for the false alarm?

    • Johnnybegood says:

The person who phoned it in, because he didn’t take the time to determine what was actually going on and wasted all that manpower.
Just because there’s smoke doesn’t mean there is a fire out of control.
Some people just want to feel important by meddling in other people’s business, when they should be minding their own!
If you make the call be prepared to give your ID so that the fire dept can track you down latter if you wasted their time..

people have to use common sense ,and not screw it up..both the people that have fires and the would be callers, don,t build a huge rec.fire and people shouldn,t call until they know for sure there is a fire in a building ..or shed etc. also be aware of what direction the wind is blowing..

  5. Winchester says:

Hopefully the idiot that should be minding his own business and not trying to be a cellphone hero!

  6. Berend says:

Before calling, look at the fire. If it is coming out of the window of a house, call 911. If it is in the back yard and there are a bunch of people sitting in lawn chairs around it, pull up a chair, or keep on driving.

finally a glimmer of hope for more privacy and rights..less intrusive nanny state government. Keep the ball rolling!!!

  8. Leasa says:

The new age of the cell phone! People really should make sure they have an actual emergency before firing off 911. We’ve always burned leaves, ditches and had fires without a problem or a firetruck showing up. If people call in a needless 911, they should be charged for the expense. Look before you call folks!

    • Brother says:

why on earth do people burn ditches? It only helps to germinate weed seeds. What a waste of time.

this past summer I ended up at the doctors, office with a full blown asthma attack………didn’t even know I had asthma…………someone was burning down a barn…..lots of nasty stuff in it…………several weeks later came home from work to blue clowds of smoke ……couldn’t breath…..my husband called 911, the people having with their lovely backyard fire were burning appliances……thank you……….say all of us with breathing issues.

    • Leasa says:

Once the barn was burned, you don’t have to worry about the same barn being burned down again. As for the appliances…it was against the law last year, so changing this law will obviously have no impact on your neighbours. Did you try talking to them and explaining your health concerns? Or filing a nuisance complaint?

  11. invader39 says:

You people, who think this is great; give your heads a shake!!
an open fire in an urban area? in a subdivision?
I just can`t get over some the crazy things this council does; this had to rank up there with some of the dumbest!!!
You know people will be burning their garbage,( everyone will have a 45 gallon drum in their yard now); becasue the tipping fees are too high at the dump and in the spring/fall they will be burning leaves!

  12. Al says:

Great, now I’ll have to keep my windows shut when the wind is blowing my way. Our neighbour already uses a small outdoor fireplace and that is bad enough. Now I am sure his fires will double in size and the smoke from the wet wood, painted wood, etc, will waft over to our place right next door.

Why is this a good thing? We live too close together for this. At least an indoor fireplace has a chimney that is at roof level. If I wanted to live at a cottage, I wouldn’t have bought in town. I have healthy lungs and I just find it annoying, but the neighbour behind them has emphysema and I bet he loves this idea.

    • BOB says:

if your neighbors house is to close, report it to the bylaw office !
if he is burning something that is not a natural prodduct that burns (chemicals, plastics, manmade fibres,or other manmade inorganics)report him to the bylaw office!
if you just don’t like the lot sizes, sell out and move to an area where your neighbors will be further away from you,(the arctic or further north)!
or if you don’t like it that the neighbors enjoy the outdoors, move to a highrise condo somewhere in a city, instead of our rural area!
or if your that bad with your allergy’s move into a bubble,as it’s obvious that your immunity’s are not developped(inherited from your parents lack of natural birth control efforts)!
or maybe you just like to complain?

      • Al says:

Nice comment Bob (sarcasm). We have had the property for a long tome and it is a 50″ lot. It’s a nice home in a nice neighbourhood. Why should I move to accommodate my neighbour?

I’m just saying that this new regulation may present a problem for people who live close together and we can’t all move out to the country as you suggest.

Bob, if your neighbour parked their stereo outside and cranked it, while you were out in your yard 40′ away with friends having a BBQ, would you just ignore it and let them enjoy the outdoors?

To the person who said you can’t legislate good behavior, what do you think by-laws are for?

        • BOB says:

i would report the neighbor to the by-law office, and prior to that i would purchased a place that had boundary’s that were more than 50 or even a 100 ft.
much like i had since in the 60′s.
and if not becoming disabled would still have!
i would insure that there was ample space to enjoy my life !
i couldn’t force my self or my family to live in an area that i myself disliked as you seem to prefer !
you are the master of your own destiny !
don’t blame your neighbors for your character flaws !
if you don’t lke where you live, move on!
          i hate whiners !

  13. Jim says:

I think this is a cost cutting measure from the fire deptartment. I bet they will save a significant amount of money not having to respond to small backyard fires.

I agree that burning garbage may become an issue. I was not able to find the actual by-law, just this article. I hope it states what materials are legal to be burned and what is not.

  14. Medusa says:

We used to shred all our important papers. This will now allow us to burn them instead and save a few bucks. Stupid and inconsiderate people will continue to be stupid and inconsiderate. You cannot legislate civility, citizenship and common sense.

The air we breathe has no property boundaries. For those who will abuse this new “freedom” – what goes around, comes around.

    • Al says:

Why do you think we have by-laws? What goes around does not always come around. Some people are antisocial antagonists by nature and others are good. Guess who usually pays? In your case probably your neighbours. Unfortunately our politicians are pusillanimous pussy-footers and rarely do the right thing for fear of losing votes.

  15. Disgruntled Citizen says:

I am suprised that people can have a campfire in an urban area, since the chances of something going wrong and starting a whole subdivision ablaze isn’t going to sit well with insurance companies should this ever occur.

  16. BooHoo says:

I love it now I can burn as much and whenever i want I would much sooner smell freshly burning wood (even garbage for that matter) then the pig farms that Norfolk allowed this close to town!
Sit in my back yard some days, and you would enjoy the odd smell of smoke that a few people are complaining about.

  17. chickenlittle says:

When am I going to be able to have chickens in my back yard?

    • Brother says:

Are you going to light them on fire? That would be o.k if you are having fun. The by law would approve recreational fires.

  18. Sarcy says:

The lost art of compromise… I want what I want and couldn’t care how my actions effect those around me.

It really isn’t hard to see why there is so many broken marriages and why our politicians can’t get anything worth while done. It doesn’t seem like anyone has the ability to consider anyone else but themselves.

Maybe we should abolish all laws and we can run around like neanderthals every man for themselves.

    • Al says:

“Maybe we should abolish all laws and we can run around like neanderthals every man for themselves.”

The modern term for that is “Libertarian”. Have you ever noticed that most libertarian’s are wealthy Hollywood types who don’t want the government in their faces? That’s because they don’t have any neighbours, that bug them, only 40′ away. They don’t need bylaws because they have security fences around their mansions.
